The Georgia-Pacific Restroom Emergency Playbook: What I've Learned From 200+ Rush Dispenser Fixes

Here's a scenario that keeps me up at night: you're managing a mid-sized office building, and it's 30 minutes before a major client event. The janitor calls—the main restroom is out of paper, and nobody can figure out how to open the Georgia-Pacific dispenser. I've been that person more times than I can count.

When to Use This Checklist

If you have the luxury of time (like, more than 5 minutes), you can check the model number—usually printed on a sticker inside the lid or on the back. But in a real emergency, you don't have that luxury.

The Step-by-Step Emergency Process

Step 1: Identify the Lock Type (10 Seconds)

Before you do anything, look at the lock. Georgia-Pacific uses two main systems on their commercial dispensers:

  • A small, keyhole-style lock (looks like a tiny circle on the side or bottom). This requires the actual GP key, or a flathead screwdriver if you're in a pinch (note to self: never admit this in a training manual, but it works).
  • A push-button or lever mechanism. These are the ones that look like they should open if you just press something the right way. People assume you push it in. What you don't see is that you often need to push up or slide it laterally.

  1. Look for a release button or tab. It's usually on the bottom or the side. It may be flush with the plastic—feel for it.
  2. Press and slide. If you find the button, press it and simultaneously slide the cover upward or outward. It's tempting to think you just push it. The reality is you need two actions at once.
  3. No button? Check the corners. Some older models have a small latch in the top-left or top-right corner that needs to be depressed with a paperclip or the end of a pen.
  4. The last resort method. If you've tried everything and the cover won't budge, the lock pin might be jammed. I've had to gently (and I mean gently) insert a flat screwdriver into the side seam to create enough flex to release the pin.   1. Look for the release latch. It's almost always on the bottom center of the unit. It's a small plastic tab you push in and pull down on.
  2. The battery compartment. If the unit beeps but doesn't dispense, the batteries need replacing. You need a Phillips head screwdriver. The cover for the battery compartment is a small, separate door on the bottom. I went back and forth between replacing the whole unit and just swapping batteries for a year. Ultimately, keeping a pack of D-cells in the supply closet saved me $1,200 in service calls (in 2023 alone).
  3. The override switch. There's usually a manual feed button inside the main compartment. If everything else fails, this will at least get paper out for the next few hours. People assume the sensor is the problem when it's just a stuck piece of paper.

Step 4: The Compact® Roll System (20 Seconds)

I actually like these models. They're the most straightforward.

  1. Lift the cover from the bottom. There's a visible notch near the bottom center. Put your fingers in the notch and pull toward you, then lift.
  2. That's it. Honestly, if you can't figure this one out, it's time to call a specialist. The amount of time I've spent on calls for these when the person just needed to pull harder is... embarrassing.

Common Mistakes and What Actually Works

Here's what I've learned from the dozens of times I've had to talk someone through this over the phone.

  • Forcing it is the enemy. The plastic is designed to flex, not to be pried. If you're using a tool that makes a creaking noise, stop. You're about to break the locking mechanism, which turns a 2-minute problem into a $200 replacement.
  • Don't assume the key is the only solution. I've had three different situations in 2024 where the facility manager had the key on their ring but it had been cut wrong. The locks are cheap and they wear out. Trying to force a wrong key will strip the cylinder.
  • The 'push harder' myth. On the enMotion® models, I get why people feel like pressing the sensor harder should make it work. It's a common assumption. But the sensor isn't pressure-sensitive; it's optical. If it's not detecting a hand, it's either dirty or the batteries are low.

To be fair, these dispensers are generally reliable. They hold a lot of paper, they reduce waste, and they keep the floor cleaner. But when they go wrong, it's usually at the worst possible time.

The One Thing Nobody Tells You

If you've spent 3 minutes trying to open a dispenser and failed, the problem isn't you—it's likely the locking mechanism. GP dispensers, especially the older mechanical ones, have a plastic tab that breaks off after about 3-4 years of daily use. When that tab breaks, the only way to open it is to destroy the lock.

I've never fully understood why this part isn't reinforced, especially since these dispensers sell in the tens of thousands. If someone has insight into the engineering decision, I'd genuinely love to hear it. But for now, the fix is to buy a replacement lock kit (around $12 on Amazon as of January 2025) instead of a whole new dispenser.
